5Excellent for movie viewing, idiot proof but you will want some other speakers for sound if you want a movie experience.
By Two kids mom
I am a teacher and am now using three versions of this projector currently in my classrooms as well as sharing with others, the EX7210 and the EX3210 and this projector the Powerlite Home Cinema 710HD . I have also used them to view movies at home as well. The EX3210 is a lower end model without the HDMI connector, and if you want to use it for movies that model is not a good option. Both the EX7210 and the Powerlite Home Cinema 710 provide excellent movie viewing experiences. Viewed from a distance of five feet from the screen one does not observe pixilation. If you get your nose up to it, you can see the pixels slightly. You could use either of these projector both for movie watching and for presentations. This is an excellent option rather than a huge big screen TV, as it takes up much less space and is more versatile. You can use it for movies (even outside if you are willing to come up with a screen) or in the classroom. They are small and light enough to bring along with you. They have horizontal and vertical adjustment so that if your screen is not perfectly perpendicular you can still watch a movie that is not slanted. You do need to come up with some other option for speakers if you want to watch a movie with this projector and have a full movie experience.COMPARING the EX7210 and the Powerlite 720HDI compared the EX7210 and the Powerlite 710HD head to head and could find almost no difference when viewing other than the color of the projector casing. Both have WXGA (1280 X800) resolution and we noticed no difference in the clarity or brightness between the two.SAME SPECIFICATIONS:Contrast 3000:1 for both, weight 5.1 lbs for both, size same, Inputs all the same, zoom lens the same, aspect ratio the same (16:10), lamp life the same (4000 hours) both with 3LCDs. Both have a maximum audible noise of 37.0 dB. The remotes are exactly the same.DIFFERENT SPECIFICATIONS:These specifications were different (besides the casing color): The Powerlight specifically mentions that it has four preset color modes for various environments and that it can be mounted on the ceiling 3.5 feet to 35.5 feet away from the screen. If you plan to mount it on the ceiling, be aware that the focus adjustment is manual, so you will need to have the screen stay in the same place or be able to reach the projector. So it seems that the projectors are very similar, with the Powerlight being aimed toward movie watching and games. However, when using them on a 120 inch screen from the same distance, no difference was perceptible.GENERAL INFO about both EPSON projectors:The projector itself is smaller than I expected. It is also reasonably light and comes with a carry case for easy transport. As teacher who moves from room to room the portability is handy. The carry case has a strap long enough to throw it over your shoulder, a real plus when you are juggling stuff between classrooms. The case has a front pocket for the power cord and remote as well. The manual and CD (for extra info) are originally packed inside this front pocket of the case.*Inputs:The projector is absolutely idiot proof when it comes to inputs. You can push the button that says Source Search and it will find where you are trying to input and start displaying the information.*Light output: Light output is strong enough that Powerpoint presentations and movies can be seen with the projector 20 feet away from the screen (this is as far back as I can get it in the room in partially lit room. Partially lit in this case is defined as the overhead lights are off but the three windows do not have blinds. The room is bright enough that the students can easily see their papers and take notes (and I can see the students!). These projectors put out 2800 lumens (a lumen is a unit of visible light emitted by a source). The school has 1500 lumen projectors, which I rarely used because the lights had to be all the way off for the student to see the projections, and that leads to trouble. You can watch a movie in normal ambient room light, but a slightly darkened room is better and a really dark room provides a fantastic experience.*Sound output:It has built in speakers and they are loud enough for use in a room with 50 students but just barely. In the smaller room with 25 kids it is great. If you use it with a laptop I would suggest adding some speakers for sound. You are not going to want to watch a movie on a giant screen with just the sound coming out of this unit, you are better off running the sound from the DVD player into some decent speakers.*Noise and Heat: They hum. The fan whirs. Not very loud but it is audible. They get hot, and fast. The manual says you do not have to wait for them to cool, but I usually do so.*Other uses:The projector can also be used in science class to project a clear slide of one color of light to show color absorption and reflection. I know this is not what it was designed for at all, but it works very well for this purpose. I simply made an image of the various colors I want to compare, put those images on a usb drive and since the projector uses LCD to make the light the wavelengths are very precise. Although this will probably not be useful for most users it does show you how clear a projection the device yields. The clarity of these projects is such that I can use three overlapping squares of the primary colors of light and the secondary colors are easy to see, with the overlap of the three being white, as expected.*Other issues:I originally tried to use the projectors with really cheap (think less than a cup of high end coffee) 25 foot long HDMI cables. This caused some problems, with the signal dropping out every once in a while. Digital is either all there, or not. With a slightly better (think two fast food dinners) 25 foot cable I did not have this problem. The replacement lamp is currently just over 160 dollars on Amazon. Since it is rated for 4,000 hours that is a lot of science and math (or movies!).I cannot speak to the price/value for these projectors (as I only have these and the school ones but they are a LOT better than the school provided ones. Everybody wants to borrow them, and since they are easy to move around it is simple to loan them out.I received this projector through Amazon Vine.

5Great Product
By Southpaw
First of all, I don't know what the negative reviews on this projector are talking about. They said the picture wasn't clear. That's what the focus ring is for. They said the sound was poor. Projectors aren't supposed to have good sound; get an external set of speakers. On to my review. Out of the box the colors in theater mode are pretty darn good. I messed with the settings a little bit, but I ended up going back to the factory default on "theater" mode and it looks awesome. See the review on projectorreviews.com for a similar opinion on color. The clarity of picture is excellent. The reviewer on projectorcentral.com claims that its best to let the 710hd warm up for 5 minutes and then set the focus ring. I have not experienced this. I focus it at the beginning and have no issues after that. The motion is smooth on action scenes as well. The menu is very straightforward and user friendly. This projector is also a light cannon. It will be perfect for outdoor movies on screens larger than living room setups (larger screens require more light). There are two things that I'm not too crazy about on the projector. 1) The blacks aren't terrific. I'm over it though and completely forget about it as I become engrossed in a film. 2) I place my projector on a coffee table in the living room. I have to place the projector on a small box about 12 inches high because the bottom of image is nearly level with the lens. Basically, there really isn't any offset angle on this projector. I could just angle it up and use keystone correction, but that harms the resolution of the image, and I'm not going to do that.In summary, I love this projector. I am sensitive to rainbows and sold my DLP projector to get this one. I couldn't be happier as I can focus on the movies now and not get distracted by the rainbow effect. Don't let forums or reviews convince you that you NEED 1080p. 720 looks phenomenal with blu-ray and you won't be disappointed. Use the extra 300-400 dollars you save in not getting a decent 1080p projector, and get a nice screen or lots of blu-rays. Don't get me wrong, 1080p will look crisper, and eventually, I will even upgrade when prices drop even further. But, I promise you will not be disappointed in 720p.

5Just about the best 720p projector.
By Mr. Me
Ok, I've been using this projector for about 3 days now (about 40 hours of use). I've had 2 other projectors before this and did a ton of research for all 3 purchases, so I'm not new to the game.As 720p, home "entertainment" projectors go, this is about your best bet. You can get a 1080 projector for a similar ballpark price, but it's gonna have about 1k lumens, not 2800! I use this in my living room as daily-use entertainment, not a totally dark, basement "home theater". It's perfect. Before this, I had the Viewsonic 720p machine. Before that, a palm-sized, 30 lumen Optoma pico projector that was great for the extreme portability, but I wanted home entertainment. The Viewsonic was nice, but this Epson is a tad quieter, has a crisper image and, most importantly, the colors! The colors on the Viewsonic were way off, brownish yellows and that sort of thing. I've heard that you can use software to get it up to par but I was never able to get good colors out of it with the built in menu. This Epson is amazing out of the box! I'll get around to tweaking it eventually, but I don't see it needing much. Feels like better quality overall than the Viewsonic. Sleeker cabinet, better remote, etc. Don't expect to use onboard speakers with a living room setup, only portable situations, if even then. Hook this up to a nice surround sound system.P.S. to anyone on the fence about buying their first projector: I was at a local electronics store yesterday and saw the 90" Sharp Aquos LED. The world's largest LED tv...$9000...I thought of my $600 Epson at home showing 120" with the quality of a 720p plasma...I laughed. So you say if I watch in 720 instead of 1080, you'll give me another 30" and $8400 back? Um, okay!

51080p Goodness for the budget-minded!
By Christopher Pike
I first wrote this review on another site, and now that I've had more time with this projector I have added and changed a few things and am reposting the review on Amazon. I think more people will look to Amazon when purchasing this projector, especially since the other site is not stocking it anymore. Hopefully this review helps those of you who are on the edge about purchasing this projector.Pros: Good looking, gloss-white finish. Low-noise fan on normal-bulb mode. 4000 hours lamp life on econo is greater then most projectors! Good enough to use in bright mode to use with lights turned on in the room. In the dark, it looks simply amazing!1080p content looks very good. Blu-rays played from a PS3 (or other blu-ray player) look awesome. I watched Kung-Fu Panda and was "wowed" by what you can notice on a much larger screen. I just watched Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen on it last night and I was amazed at the details and I noticed things I didn't even notice when I saw it in IMAX. This might have been because in IMAX you have such an insanely huge screen that you miss some things you might not have noticed before since you have to actually turn your head to look at the entire screen. Still, blu-ray content is amazing to see with this projector. I find it very hard to believe you can buy this for under $1000.Video games look awesome. It works well with PS3 and 360 consoles. You get a huge advantage over other players when you can see them off in the distance before they could actually see you on a normal HDTV. This of course all depends on the size of the screen you use. I'm using a 92" diagonal white screen by EliteScreens. Not the greatest of screens but will get me by for a year or two until I get the funds for a good, fixed screen. When using my PS3 with my tv I set the RGB color-spectrum to limited range in the display options on the PS3. On the tv, with the setting on full it would be far too dark and black out way too much shadow detail. On this projector you can turn on full-range and make use of the entire spectrum and it will give you better blacks and whites this way. If you put this projector on the bright pre-set setting (not high lamp mode) then you can blind yourself by the whites this thing is capable of in the dark. Bright setting should really only be used when you have a lot of ambient light to fight with. Otherwise the Cinema, Reference, or your own custom settings with the help of a calibration disc is probably best. There are lot's of options for adjusting brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. Everything you find on current HDTV's seems to be a setting you can change here. I personally find cinema mode is about perfect for use in dark environments where you can shut off all the light and enjoy a movie. Sharpness is used differently on this projector then it is on many HDTV's. With my tv I took the sharpness down to zero, because all it was doing was adding pixels to make the picture appear sharper and it would actually take away from the realism of the picture. On this projector the default value is 7 and if you lower it you are actually softening the picture and going negative with the sharpness effect. I found the sweet spot to be 10. At the value of 10 I get extremely sharp, crisp looking text in all my games and the picture looks better at that setting then at the default of 7. Anything below 7 would turn too soft and look blurred... like looking through a water covered windshield. The Optoma features automatic shut-off which you can adjust. By default I believe it is turned off. I set mine for 15 minutes. This feature will automatically turn off the projector after no signal is detected for "xx" amount of minutes. Very useful if you are not the only one using the projector and have fears of friends/family leaving it turned on.Cons: I have been used to using a Samsung 46" LN46A650 model tv, and then going to this, there is a very noticeable difference in black level. You will not get the deep blacks with this projector that you can on a good HDTV, but thankfully it doesn't ruin the experience. Black level detail is there, which is good, it just does not produce an inky-black. It's more of a very dark shade of gray. I messed around with the Digital Video Essentials blu-ray for the contrast/brightness adjustments for a while. I was not able to get the entire line-chart to display. Either the whites would get too washed out and too bright, or the darks would get too dark and force the white sections to get dark. The projector seemed about correct with out-of-the-box settings on cinema.I did not mess around with deeper menu's such as the gamma, and film modes, or try changing the colors yet. I'm not experienced at self-calibrating, so don't take my word for it, but I could not get the contrast portion much better then it already is out-of-the-box.Auto-focus would have been a nice option. It's not a big deal if you get this projector mounted and won't have to keep moving it. You can just find the right spot and leave it there, and it should be fine. On that note, if you are planning to leave this on a coffee table it will probably work alright. At first, I tried to shelf-mount this projector to save having to buy a ceiling mount. I had it about 5 feet above ground-level and I could not get a picture I was happy with. I had to angle it way down by rotating the back legs so they were fully extended and then adding a couple slim-cd cases to raise the back even further. I adjusted keystone all the way and it was still off and looked like a trapezoid. Unless you plan on using this within 3 feet of the floor, I would expect to be ceiling mounting this baby! There's your warning to anyone wondering about this.None of my cons knock a star off my rating on this wonderful product though. You can't really say too many negative things about a 1080p projector for <$1000!!I am very glad I bought this! At first I was worried that 92" might be too big for me, sitting back about 9.5 ft away, but having used it a while now, it is perfect. The projector will utilize up to a 300" screen, so I cannot wait till I move into my first house and have a nice area to set up for a 150" screen! I think that would be idea.*** Update 3/5/10 ***I've now owned this for about 5 months, and I have yet to run into any problems with it. I have over 300 hours of use on the bulb now. Once the bulb has had proper time to break in (200+) you will notice a better black level than when it was brand new. I still don't have any gripes with the performance of this projector. Everything has been fantastic. You really get all of your moneys worth with this sub-$1000 HD projector. I haven't been to a movie in the theater at all this year, and I was the guy who usually went almost every Friday. I can stay home and get the same experience now.

4Initial impressions, very pleased
By Tustinfarm
This was an upgrade for me from a 720p, DLP projector (Mitsubishi HD1000u). Initial impressions are very positive, based on about 10 hours of viewing & tweaking. Very quiet, and plenty bright running in low power mode. The high resolution (1920 X 1080) approaches that for a typical 2k digital cinema, so my 145" diagonal screen, viewed from about 15 feet distance, provides a very pleasing movie experience. That said, the increase in resolution from 720p is an incremental step, so it is not the be all and end all of image quality in projectors. More specifically the source material you feed it is what really brings out the quality. Many HD feed materials (from cable or satellite) don't ever approach the inherent resolution of the projector, so at this point only blu-ray source material will really give the utmost in high resolution detail (and not even all disks, depending on the original mastering, etc.). Black levels are similar to my previous DLP projector, so if you are obsessed with having pitch black star fields, you should opt for a pricier DLP or LCD projector, which may more closely approach jet black in those situations. I don't worry too much about this aspect, reminding myself that even film projectors don't provide jet black when the screen goes blank, so the HD20 actually matches the real cinema experience more closely (how's that for rationalizing why a cheaper projector is better!) . At this price level (<$1000) it is hard to imagine a bigger bang for the buck in terms of image quality. Finally, I highly recommend you check out www.avsforum.com , where there is an extensive discussion thread about this and competing projectors.

5The New Cornerstone of My Man Cave - Updated
By Steve Conslaw
I snatched up this projector as soon as I could after it was introduced (October 2010). I felt confident buying a brand new product because this projector is an evolution of the highly regarded 8100 from last year. The 8100 brought 1080P resolution to the mainstream of the home projector market. For the same price or lower, the 8350 improves upon the 8100 in several areas. First, it has inorganic rather than organic LCD panels. This feature suddenly became important to me when my six year old Sanyo PLV-Z2's blue panel gave out. I found out that (eventual) blue panel failure is a common problem with the old Sanyo's organic panels. Inorganic panels are more stable and heat-resistant. In addition to the inorganic panels, the 8350 is brighter than the 8100 and it has a higher contrast ratio (black/white).Since most people (including me) won't be comparing projectors side-by-side, I'll tell you what's likely to be important to somebody considering a home theater projector purchase. Placement flexibility is very important to home projector buyers on a budget. If you have to pay someone to do a ceiling installation, you can pay half this projector's list price just for the installation. The Epson 8350 has a long 2.1 power zoom lens and vertical and horizontal lens shift. What this means is that you can likely put the projector on a bookcase shelf at the side of a room 10-15 feet away from your projection wall or screen and skip any formal installation whatsoever. The second important feature is brightness. Unlike my old projector, the new Epson is bright enough to project a good picture with room lights on. It can easily substitute for a 60 inch flat panel television, with modest light control measures. With the lights off, you can crank the image up to 200 inches if you have the space. (By the way, I've never bothered with getting a screen. I don't even use a white wall. I project onto a tan wall, and the picture is fine.)The biggest marketing feature of this projector is its 1080P native resolution. It looks good. I was a little surprised that 1080P didn't make as much of a difference as I expected, but it looks good. I didn't really have to make many changes to the default settings to get a picture of my liking.I have only used the projector with HDMI input. Other inputs are available - see the product description for details. Kudos to Epson for including a LIGHTED remote. I don't know why all projector remotes aren't lighted. The projector is very quiet. The advertised lamp (bulb) light is 4,000 hours. That will mean several years of use for an average buyer. There is one feature that's not particularly convenient, and that is size. This projector is surprisingly large. You really notice it in the store if it is positioned next to business-class projectors. In the business niche size (small) and light output/dollar are key features. Business projectors don't have the lens shift and zoom flexibility of the 8350. Business projectors typically have lower resolution, and they are louder than the 8350. If you are looking for a projector to carry with you to business meetings and to sometimes use at home for movies there are probably better (lighter and cheaper) choices; however for home use the Epson 8350 is hard to beat. Finally, I want to remind people who have never purchased a home theater projector that you have to have a source for the picture to be fed to the projector. I use a Playstation3 and a stand-alone HDTV tuner (hard to find except online) plugged into an Onkyo home theater receiver. You should budget for a home theater receiver (receivers with speakers are called "home theater in a box" or HTIB) that has HDMI in and out, preferably at least 3 inputs and 2 outputs. It's best to rig things so that everything goes into the receiver, and then one HDMI cable goes from the receiver to the projector. It is a lot cheaper to get your HDMI cables online. In conclusion, the Epson 8350 can be thought of as a tweaked "next year's model" of the 8100. Since the 8100 got the core features right, not much improvement was needed. Epson apparently controlled the inventory of the 8100s pretty well. After the 8350 was released, I looked for blow-out deals on the 8100 and didn't find any. You can pay just as much for the outgoing 8100 as the 8350. You might as well get the newer model.SUPPLEMENT 12/28/2010 - Using a projector for motion gaming.I've had people ask me how you can use a projector to play Wii games. Remember, with a home theater projector, the projector is (usually) behind you, not in front of you like a television, so you can't put the sensor bar on the projector. The answer is quite simple, and that is to use an audio-video receiver or a dedicated HTIB receiver. You plug the console into the receiver just like you would plug it into your television. The receiver will either be in front of you or close enough to the front that you can run the game's sensor cable to game console without any improvised wiring. Wii games are quite fun blown up to wall size, even though the Wii is not a high definition device. PS3 games and BluRay movies on the Playstation 3 look fantastic. I don't have an XBOX 360, but if you want to give me one, I'll be happy to write about it.UPDATE 5/17/2011 - FIRST LAMP DIES. My first lamp (bulb) just burnt out. If this becomes a repeated thing, it will justify a lower rating. The lamp had under 700 hours, well under the 4000 hour rating. It seems like the official Epson replacement lamp is hard to find in stock, but I just ordered a third party replacement lamp, the Electrified ELPLP49 / V13H010L49 Replacement Lamp with Housing for Epson Projectors - 150 Day Warranty which is apparently in stock. Once I get a chance to install it, I will update this review.UPDATE 5/19/2011 Right after I put in the order for the replacement lamp, I remembered reading on AVS Forums that some projector buyers from various manufacturers who experienced premature lamp failure sometimes got goodwill replacements even when the lamps were technically out of warranty. I emailed Epson about the problem, and in less than 24 hours, they responded via email that they would ship a replacement lamp. I'll never know whether Epson was influenced by the fact that I have publicly described my experience with the projector here ever since I got it. I'm sure it didn't hurt. It was a show of good customer service by Epson, nonetheless. I cancelled my Electrified replacement lamp before it shipped. I'll update when I receive the Epson replacement lamp. Remember, whatever projector you buy, if the lamp fails prematurely, go ahead and call or email the manufacturer and ask for a good will replacement. I'm sure you can't go to the well repeatedly, and most of them handle these on a case by case basis.UPDATE 5/30/2011 Epson promptly sent me a replacement lamp as they promised. I installed it, and it works fine. 5 STARS FOR EPSON CUSTOMER SERVICE on this. The lamp wasn't technically under warranty but they replaced it as a customer satisfaction gesture. In comparison, the last time I had to call Sony about a warranty repair, they gave me the third degree.

5A very competent 1080p projector at a fantastic price
By J. Martz
I purchased the Epson 8350 to replace a 5-year-old Sony 720p projector in my family room. Like all projectors, your application and results will depend strongly on your room choice and lighting conditions. My room is not a dedicated theater room, and has some ambient light during the day.The Epson 8350 has exceeded my lofty expectations based on research and reviews prior to purchase. The 8350 is a 3LCD projector which uses Epsons upgraded inorganic LCD panels (the key improvement in this model over last year's excellent 8100 with cheaper organic LCD panels). As a result, the contrast and black levels on this projector are outstanding. Setup was fairly easy, and the extended range zoom on this model coupled with both horizontal and vertical lense-shift made placement a breeze. Do note, this model does not have digital keystone adjustment, so you must mount the projector level and then shift the image with the lense adjustments. I had to carefully level my ceiling mount to accomplish this. The 8350 is a large projector, larger than the images suggest. This may be an issue for a shelf mount or if you place on a table. Image quality is simply stunning, especially at this price point. The 8350 has 5 main "modes" and each is suited to a different use and lighting condition. "Dynamic" mode is bright, very bright. On my Optoma GrayWolf II screen (a gray screen - highly recommended if you have ambient light and want to use during the day), at a 100" picture size, the image was bright and clear, even with ambient light from 4 windows at the side. "Living Room" mode is a touch less bright, but ups the contrast and gives slightly deeper blacks. For night-time viewing, the Cinema, Natural, and HDMI Color modes are all excellent. I found I used the HDMI color mode most often, as this gave excellent, black levels, good black level detail, and rich, deep colors. Switching between modes is a breeze, with a dedicated "color mode" button on the excellent (and lighted!) remote. The projector focuses extremely well, and the image was even throughout the range, with crisp details corner to corner. A handy "pattern" button on the remote projects a nice, crisp pattern for focus and image centering. Screen-door effects were basically non-existant, and you could only make out the pixel matrix from less than about 3 feet from the screen. At 1080p, with a nice Blu Ray source, the result is stunning. Honestly, this setup with a good sound system is better than most theaters.I had to adjust very little in the image to get a quality, natural result. The 8350 has plenty of adjustment settings if you wish, including advanced gamma and sharpness settings. A quick color temperature adjustment and enabling of the auto-iris was all I really needed. Eventually, I will calibrate the projector with a calibration DVD, but I'm very pleased with the results out-of-the-box.A few other notes. The projector is quiet, nicely so. Fan noise is barely audible. The projector is large, and the mounting holes are fairly wide. My "universal" mount didn't quite reach all the mounting holes, and I had to custom-make a few mounting arms to get my mount to fit. Be sure to test your mount if you're buying both together. One small quibble: the power plug and HDMI ports on on opposite sides of the back panel. This required a large cable stretch, which looks a bit odd. I would prefer all ports to be closely spaced, so you can minimize cable clutter.Overall, this is a stunning projector which is a new standard in value. With a sale price under $1300, this is a no brainer.Certainly, you can spend 2x to 10x more and obtain a slightly better picture. This projector is all about performance at an amazing price. Just 2 years ago, you'd have to pay well over $5000 to get a good 1080p projector. Now, you can exceed many theaters in your own home.

5No better value!
By MakeItSo#1
This projector is outstanding. The quality of the image is unsurpassed in its class and probably the next class up. One overlooked feature is the lense shift. There are no digital image manipulation controls on this projector. As long as the lense is parallel to the screen, the lense-shift will make sure it is centered. Optical lense shift is a feature usually only found on high end projectors. This projector replaced my InFocus X1 which lasted over 7 years (and is still going strong). No regrets!BTW: ADVANCITY is scamming you with the list price of $2422.30. It is sold by Epson (MSRP) for $1299.00 and the street price is typically $1199.00. Buy it from someone else!
