58500UB Very Nice
By Nick
This is my first projector. I tend to be extremely picky about my image and sound quality. I was nervous and somewhat skeptacle going from my 62" DLP TV to a projector. I researched different projectors for weeks. Every time I looked up a review for one projector it would mention a different one for comparison. I would then have to research that one. I ended up creating a spreadsheet listing prices, pro's, con's and more finer details. I ended up settling for the 8500UB since many sites rave about it.I wish I could have given 4.5 stars on this review. I wouldn't call it a perfect 5 nor would I call it a 4. I am overall very pleased with the projector and it is well worth $2500. Shop around and you'll save a lot. I ordered mine at projectorbundles.com. You get cables, screen, mount and projector at a great price. If they don't have the screen size on the website just email them.I have about 30 hours on it. I still fiddle with the color calibration settings. [...] has a decent starting point for calibration.Since it is LCD you have much wider flexability where it can be mounted. The problem with the offsets is image distortion especially side to side. Plan to mount it in the center with VERY little side offsets. See note 2 below. Side offset makes the image twist appear out of level. Over the width of a large screen being off-level slightly is very noticeable. The two very minor things I would mark it down for: 1. Small dark text on a light background can get slightly washed out. It is still legible, just not crisp. 2. I use the projector as my main TV. Not everything is broadcast in HD widescreen. I have it ceiling mounted with a standard 8' ceiling with 110" 16:9 grey screen. Full screen 4:3 images have a very slight trapezoid effect. Since the projector is closer to the top of the screen light has to travel further to get to the bottom. It is slightly wider at the bottom. Again, I am very picky!!! A friend viewing would probably not notice.Screen Tip: Make sure the screen has a velvet frame because the black velvet absorbs light. Since the trapezoid effect is noticeable with full screen images if you overshoot widescreen images just a hair they will appear square and you don't notice trapezoid effects at all.Washout: If you have a lot of ambient light in the room you will definitely have washout. I highly recommend blackout curtains for sunlight.Noise: The projector is very quiet. I have it mounted on my ceiling about two feet behind my couch. Occasionally, I can hear the Iris shift but I have to be listening for it. Quiet scenes in a movie are no problem.Color is fantastic. Nice deep dark blacks and shadow effects. HD signals and Blu-Ray discs are awesome. With a little planning setup is a breeze.-------------------Update: I'm happy to give this projector a 5/5 star rating. One of the comments left mentions to make sure the the projector is mounted squarely on the ceiling. Then simply use the lens shift. It does not skew the image at all. As long as the screen is level you are good to go. I have used the projector for about a year with nearly 2000 hours with no problems.

5Superb high-end projector all-around.
By S. Dang
The projector really earns it's UB moniker with it's outstanding ultrablack performance. The 8500UB has extremely low light leak in the blacks while still being able to capture the most subtle details in stark scenes scenes.I have watched two movies thus far on this projector. First was the colorful Disney flick "UP", next was a dark horror movie called Shiver. I projected them against a plain semi-gloss white wall at midnight, where there was a slight cast of window frames , due to surrounding businesses lights (I live in a factory conversion). The image casted was 15' (diagonal, or 180"). The bottom of the image was about 4' from the floor.Reflections on viewing UP (HD 1080p on Blu-ray):- Very bright and consistent from corner to corner.- The details were were crisp and not over or under-saturated.- Nice solid colors (viewed from about 10 ' away, which is closer than I would like but I was limited to how far back I could sit due to the trajectory of the projected image.-With frame interpolation set to low, animation was very smooth, but not overdone. There were no noticeable impact on sound sync with it enabled. With it off, animation reverted to the standard film rate at 24 FPS. I prefered having it on.-No noticeable artifacts that I saw during film.Reflections on viewing Shiver (XBOX360 1GB download, Standard Definition):-Overall movie was very dark, and the dark scenes were impacted by ambient light from outside.-Due to source, the image was not sharp and crisp, but watchable.Overall thoughts on my test drive:While putting up my blackout cloths would certainly yield a brighter image, I really didn't want to bother with the job of putting up and taking down blackout cloth on two 10 foot high windows. Even with the ambient light from outside, the image was plenty bright and not affected at all (at least for UP). It's hard to describe in text how much ambient light there was in the room, but if I were to describe it from 1 to 10 with 1 being near darkness (use of blackout cloth) and 10 being fully bright it would be a 3. I have very big windows, and ALL of my walls are white, so there was quite a bit of reflection during bright scenes. The point is there was no problems projecting 15' image in very low light settings. On the other hand, for movies staged in dark settings, as with any projector, the darker the better. There's simply no getting around it. On the point of fan noise, up close it's very quiet. From a few feet away, it wasn't noticeable. BTW, this is a right-out-of-the-box test drive. I only made basics setup adjustments, no tweaking colors, temperature, etc.Other observations:- The projector has image shift knobs that have plenty of range. I was able to move the image 4 or 5 feet (didn't measure) in each direction from center. The aspect ratio was preserved at all times. There are no keystone settings.-Two knobs for the bottom front feet. I didn't need to adjust them.-Two HDMI ports. One used for my Blu-ray player.-One set of Component Video Inputs, used for my XBOX 360.-The remote is excellent. Smooth flat white, large, backlit, well-designed remote. It's great that the key features have dedicated buttons.-Optics are very large!-Projector feels twice as heavy as my InFocus projector (X1).-When turning on the lamp takes about half a minute to a minute to come to full brightness. However, the system shuts down very quickly. Fan did not run after shutting down.-Air blown out of fan is typically hot.-On/Off rocker switch on the back, and digital switch on the top.Overall impression:EXCELLENT! There are cheaper 1080p projectors, but they don't have the same level of quality and featureset. If this projector is within your budget, you will not be disappointed. You will really appreciate the:- Extremely high contrast ratio (200,000:1)- Ultra-black darks (not just marketing)- Truly usable frame interpolation (Not overdone. Adjustable too!)- Excellent throw distance (180" cast from about 17')- Superb out-of-box performanceFor complete specs, here is a link to Epson's website:[...]

5Incredible
By The Jabberwocky
We received our 8500 projector yesterday and it is fantastic. The best I have ever owned/demo'd. Right out of the box, the colors are beautiful, the blacks are intensly black, and its brightness is excellent and more than enough for both the 137" and 106" screens we tried it out on.I have owned several projectors for quite a few years now (the infocus X1 and most recently the Optoma H79). Each impressed me in its time, but there is really no comparing either of these two to the Epson. I can't see how anyone could be disappointed in this purchase. It feels like it should be thousands of dollars more for the performance.Last night, we watched Avatar, and to us, it was better looking than when we saw it in the theater (probably owing to the 3D presentation dimming the colors and blurring the action somewhat).I'll rate this thing a solid 10. Could not be more happy with it.

5Really, really good (for the price)
By R&R
This is a good choice for a "big enough" portable monitor. We've had plenty of trouble from smaller and larger monitors, and unless you're willing to pony-up at least three times the price of this unit, there's really little reason for complaint. So far I get about 2 hrs of continuous use with Sony F970 batteries. So, the downsides first...This is a 4:3 panel.16:9 is fairly easily set, but only after accessing the menu. (no shortcut)Advanced features work, but only in 4:3 mode. (16:9 must be manually reset)This unit requires a sturdy arm for tripod attachment.Less intuitive menu.No Sharpness adjustment. No VESA mount.Good stuff...Big enough to focus with. 1:1 pixel zoom is nice.Pass-through HDMI is lag-free. Very nice when viewing on another monitor.Sturdy stand.Lots of inputs.Works with DSLR.Overscan toggle.Works with common batteries.Folding shade is very snappy.

SUMMARY: This projector is a joke in terms of color accuracy and black levels/details. I played with it for a few days, finally gave up, and sent it back.If you like Infocus then you would be way better by looking at their entry level DLP model (4805). I personally can swear by Optoma though - I have owned two Optomas (H55 and H31) and I have loved them both since more than 3 years ago. Take a look at H31 or their higher resolution models (HD72 or higher if money is not a big issue and you watch HD programming and want every detail to stay there).

S.After owning Optoma H55 projector (1024x768, DLP) for three years I bought this SP5000 when Optoma's lamp went over its 2000 hours. My main reasoning was DVI/HDCP input (H55 is not HDCP compliant) and I was hoping that the LCD technology could be at least not too far behind. Man, how wrong I was.First I was trying to get Infocus's DVI connection work. No luck. Infocus's proprietary DVI-M1 connector requires Infocus-supplied $XXX adapter (yet another joke, $XXX?). I tried to get by and got a third party adapter for 1/3 of the price but it did not work (even though it was specified as completely M1 and HDCP compliant). I gave up, sent the adapter back, and used a component connection. Now, bad things come in a package. My second issue was that SP5000 had simply terrible colors out of the box (white balance was not there at all). I tried to calibrate it with AVIA calibration DVD for 4 (!) hours and then I gave up yet another time as whatever I did could improve white balance a bit but resulting image still looked bad.I tried to watch Star Wars Episode I. Dark underwater scenes looked horrible with weird colors (with even visible brightness modulation all over my then 84" DaLite gray (1.0) screen). Shadows... well, there was NO shadows actually, but whatever was supposed to be shadows had NO details in them and looked light gray instead of black. Highlights looked overblown, and the whole picture was a bit blurry (yes, the image was focused just fine, it was video itself that looked this way after 480p to 720p upconversion). And let me tell you the same DVD looked very, very good on Optoma H55 connected to Denon DVD-2910 player using component input (I used exactly the same setup but Optoma H55 was replaced with Infocus SP5000).I ended up sending SP5000 back and bought another Optoma (H31). Let me tell you this is what I call excellent colors... After 10 min of calibration and further refinements during watching many DVDs I got it not just simply right but every time I see skin tones from a good DVD I silently say wow to myself.Shadow details were simply outstanding on Optoma H31. If I watch a DVD on 16:9 screen and there are aspect ratio black bars (right and left of the image in 4:3 format or top/bottom for 2.35:1 movies) then when a scene goes dark I simply cannot tell where my image border is. And this all is in a completely dark room... There were so many fine gradations of black in H31 where SP5000 displayed a plain dull gray image...Not to mention DVI worked out of the box on H31.My the only dislike with H31 was initially its screen door effect (I could see pixel borders at 12 feet with 92" screen, which - to be honest - is overkill and is not recommended). It was easily solved by slight defocusing though (did not decrease image sharpness or lowered video quality, just removed visible pixel barriers).Of course, if this is your first projector and you simply did not have a chance to see anything else you might even like SP5000. It's bright at least. And yes, I paid for my H31 less than SP5000 costs (and would even pay much more for the quality it provides).Good luck in your projector hunting.

5LCD projectors give best colors and black levels everytime
By Richard White
I have owned my Infocus Sp5000 for 5 years or 6209 hours view time .The problem I find with the very few negative reviews on this incredible little native 720p LCD projector is they usually come from people that have little time, experience and patients setting up and end up selling the projector prematurely and wasting precious time lodging their complaints . While the 95% of the rest of us Infocus SP5000 owners get on with enjoying the projector,so after 5 years of movie big screen bliss I thought it time to sit down and write a review......The First step is that this projector needs to be turned down a long way from factory settings in brightness and contrast.Unlike new 1080p projectors of today with standard low lumins to increase black levels ,this baby is nick named the light canon by those that know it ,so when first turned on the black levels look grey (their bad)..Factory settings are all set at 50 out of 100,the real veiwing settings need to turn down to 32 for brightness and 35 for contrast, this will give fantastic real black levels, then set photogragh for gamma and medium for temperature in its menu to give vivid and natural true color. After these few changes the picture will look perfect and easily compare to todays 1080p home theatre projectors. I have found like the thousands of other happy SP5000 owners very little screen door effect much less than other 720p DLP projectors anyway .And the big plus for the SP5000 LCD is no bad rainbow effect like the DLP projectors produce. The LCD Infocus Screen play 5000 is a mighty little Home theatre projector, fantastic for new Blu-ray and the old DVD movies.I garantee with the proper settup you can't help but love it.. Rick

5Possibly the best 720P projector
By Future DMD
Don't be fooled by the falling prices, the MSRP was a little over 4k dollars when this projector was new. It will certainly out compete other entry level 720P projectors. The contrast is phenomenal, and the projector is really a light cannon. I came from an H31, and this projector has much better deeper blacks, with more detail. Lines of resolution aren't everything, the overall image, the colors, flesh tones, the 3d pop to the image is just flawless. Overall i'll not be upgrading to 1080P for many many years, i just can't see enough of a difference between this and the entry level 1080P models i've seen.p.s. it's a short throw projector, so the image it can create is much larger at the same distance as other pj's. Make sure it'll work in your situation before you buy.

5Superb DLP PJ!!
By B. Fish
This is a very bright, very crisp PJ. I am blown away every single time I have this unit turned on to watch a movie. I have my PS3 and Oppo DVD player hooked up for DVD viewing and the picture is amazing! I would see no reason or need to maintain a 1080p PJ when this unit can be purchased for the low price you will find in the online markets. I run it always on eco mode and it is still very bright and would do just fine with some moderate ambient light. I have ran close to 250 hours on it without a hiccup. Highly Recommended!
