First impressions
By Greg Barclay
I chose this projector because of its microphone input, ample speaker, and USB and other connectivity options, after reading everything I could about projectors designed for a lecture room setting. I am therefore not as concerned about nuances of image color, dynamic range, and other subtleties as I am about usability. However, there was more to the PC free feature of the USB interface than I expected. Powerpoint slides must be saved as JPEG, BMP, or PNG images before they can be displayed by the projector from a USB device like a thumb drive, incurring noticeable loss of image resolution unless one uses an addin such as PPTools excellent ImageExport. This easy to use tool created JPEGs from Powerpoint slides that were much sharper than Powerpoint itself could make without a lot of fiddling about with registry settings, not something you want to do.The Epson onscreen interface is klutzy and the remote control is a work in progress. It is small and has minute buttons, not suited for use in front of an audience. The user manual is 200 pages long but it is vague about things that matter because it was written for use with several projector models. A key feature of the projector for me was the image preview pane, which I wanted to use in class. But, while it displays thumbnail images of ordinary JPEGS just fine, it does not show them from Powerpoint slides saved as JPEGs. The advice given by Epson Support does not fix this, and in fact an Epson video about its PC free projectors includes a sequence showing the same blank thumbnails that I get. I am therefore using a Micca media player which has excellent on screen menus and a JPEG preview pane that works fine, and has a better remote control than Epson's, as an interface between the projector and USB sources through an HDMI cable. Come on Epson, for $900 you can do better than this.

We had these projectors profesionally installed in our church us as a ministry tool. So far every one is happy with them. They have enhanced the worship service as well as saving paper and ink.
